Paula Radcliffe’s Marathon Tip

If you’re running a marathon this year, you’d be pushed to find a better person to grab advice from than marathon world recorder holder Paula Radcliffe. Here were the top tips she gave when we caught up with her earlier this year…

1) Make a training plan and stick to it. But be flexible with it; if some days your body is feeling a little down, take a few days to build it back up before you go back full tilt into the training.

2) Get the right kind of running shoes for you, for your style of running. That’s the most important piece of your kit. If you don’t get that right, you’re not going to have the best experience.

3) Join together with a group – be it a running club or a group of friends, just so you have that social side of things to help motivate each other through the training and through the event. When you’re all working towards a target, you pick each other up.

4) Get enough sleep. When I was fully training, I’d sleep nine to 10 hours and another couple of hours in the afternoon. I spent a lot of time sleeping. That is essentially when your body regenerates. You need to put the right nutrients, the right food, back in. But then also give it the chance to regenerate by getting enough sleep and enough rest.

5) Otherwise, support yourself, eat properly and have a balanced diet.
