It was a record-breaking weekend for women's running at the Diamond League athletics meet-up in Monaco

With athletics making a cautious return post-lockdown, there was plenty to be excited about in Monaco on Friday. The latest Diamond League meet-up saw some of the world’s most impressive athletes finally able to bring their talent and determination back to the table after a lengthy hiatus, resulting in an explosion of record-breaking performances.

A particular highlight for women’s athletics was the 1,000m, with Scotland’s Laura Muir setting a new British record and crossing the line in 2:30.82, beating Dame Kelly Holmes’ previous record in the process.

Despite her record-breaking run, Muir was just pipped to the post by Kenya’s Olympic 1500m champion Faith Kipyegon, who was the favourite to win. Kipyegon took home the gold, clocking in at 2:29.15 and securing herself as the second-fastest female 1000m runner of all time, less than a second behind Svetlana Masterkova’s 1996 record.

In another history-making moment, Ciara Mageean beat top British competitor Jemma Reekie to third place in the final stride, setting a new Irish record of 2:31.06. This latest win proves her status as a world-class athlete, arguably the best of a series of brilliant track performances in the last few years.

It was also an exciting day for men’s athletics, as Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei broke the men’s world 5,000m record by almost 2 seconds with an astonishing run.
