Ultrarunner and Women's Running cover star Jasmin Paris completed the Barkley Marathons 'fun run' in less than 40 hours
Ultrarunner Jasmin Paris has completed Barkley Marathons’s traditional ‘fun run’ in under 40 hours, comprising three loops of the tough 20-mile run. She crossed the finish line for a third time in 39hrs 49mins 56secs, making her the first woman in 10 years to complete the course inside the 40-hour cut off time.
This was Jasmin’s first time tackling the infamously difficult Barkley Marathons. Only 15 runners have ever completed five loops of the course – the ultimate goal – which requires a sub-36 hour time for the first three loops for a participant to continue racing.
The Barkley Marathons takes place every year in Frozen Head State Park near Wartburg, Tennessee. The race caught mainstream attention in 2014 after a documentary called The Barkley Marathons: The Race That Eats Its Young was released on Netflix, chronicling the very few finishers’ experience.
The last woman to finish the 60-mile ‘fun run’ was Bev Abbs in 2012 and, considering this year’s event kicked off on International Women’s Day, it’s incredible to see Jasmin cross the finish line. It’s a remarkable first attempt at one of the world’s toughest courses.
