Esther wins Editor of the Year at the PPA Awards

Our very own editor Esther Newman won big at the PPA Independent Publisher Awards yesterday

Wednesday 18 November marked a very special edition of the PPA Independent Publisher Awards, taking place on a virtual stage for the first time due to lockdown restrictions. Women’s Running had been shortlisted in five awards categories, including Consumer Magazine of the Year and Podcast of the Year, but it was our brilliant editor Esther Newman who took home the trophy for Editor of the Year.

We were thrilled just to be nominated for five awards after such a challenging year, so it was a fantastic moment seeing Esther win big after all her hard work and excellent leadership in 2020.

“You could have genuinely knocked me down with a feather,” she said. “It was a total rush to have been nominated in the first place, and then when I saw who I was up against, I just shrugged and thought, ah well, it’s just nice to be among them really. I did NOT expect to win, not one little bit, and if I’m honest, I’m still a bit in shock. So much so, I’ve not had a chance to actually get properly drunk and sing from the rooftops, but that will happen this weekend, for sure. But as I said to Holly straight after, I am thrilled, so utterly, completely thrilled – and as much as I’m thrilled for me, I’m over the bloody moon for Women’s Running. Because this recognises what we’re doing: that we are deeply passionate about women’s health and wellbeing, and that we strive every single day to remove any barriers that prevent women from running, and we will support anyone to run regardless of ability.

“It also recognises, I think, the women that we support – you! Because you are so brilliant: you support us by buying the magazine, by emailing me, by responding to Facebook and Instagram posts, and listening to our podcast. You tell me how you want Women’s Running to support you better, and we try our best to make that happen. And because you talk to us, and because you support us, we are able to better support you. Aren’t you great? Yes you are. This award is for you, you lovely, lovely runners. So perhaps we should all have a drink this weekend and sing from the rooftops? There’s a thought…”

Team WR will certainly be raising a glass. We’re very proud to be part of such a great team with an award-winning editor (eek!) at the helm.

Congratulations to all those shortlisted and to the other winners – you can see the full list of those here.
