Millie Mackintosh, the former Made in Chelsea socialite-turned talented Master Chef contestant, has sparked controversy after her husband Professor Green, remarked that his bikini-clad wife is the perfect ‘Thinspiration.’
Quality Street heir Millie regularly Instagrams her intensive workouts at favourite fitness haunt, the Skinny Bitch Collective, but there is a thin line between accused ‘Thinstagrams’ and the images touted on pro-anorexia websites, according to concerned eating disorder campaigners.
However, despite Millie’s waif-like look in that particular photograph, she uploads plenty of ‘Fitspiration’ images too – images that promote strength, fitness and clean living.

62% more women are working out
Millie is among celebrities such as Australian model Miranda Kerr, Kelly Brook and Kim Kardashian sparking a huge increase in the numbers of women who workout, according to a study of 2,000 women carried out by the Body Building Warehouse.
The study shows that there has been a 62 per cent increase in the number of women working out over the last 12 months. While still an interest dominated by men, the proportion of women amongst this group of serious gym-goers rose significantly, from 9 per cent to 14.6 per cent.
Unlike men, the women’s main motivations aren’t to build muscle, but to burn fat and get the toned and lean bodies typified by female stars such as Millie Mackintosh, by heading to the gym between four and five times a week.
The protein shake club
More women are increasingly using supplements, such as protein shakes, to maximise the effectiveness of their workout too. The most popular being whey-protein products such as protein shakes, on-the-go protein snacks and vitamin and mineral supplements.
Kieran Fisher, managing director of Body Building Warehouse said he was ‘pleasantly surprised’ by the results and calls this new breed of women the ‘protein princesses’. “The rise in women working out up to five times a week and complementing their work-outs and healthy eating regimes with protein supplements, could well be down to the increase in celebrities posting results of their fitness regimes on social media and the rise of celebrities now spotted with protein shakes in their hands.
“The wide variety of new snack protein products such as protein coffee and muffins now available, means that getting much needed protein into an everyday diet is fun and even easier. I’m thrilled that more women are getting active and enjoying the many benefits of exercise and healthy living.”
