This easy recipe for runners is great for pre- and post-exercise – and works well with your hormones

As we ease into the new year and get back into our training regimes, we wanted to share some easy recipes for runners that are great for pre- and post-run. We’ve asked the team at FitrWoman (a menstrual cycle tracking app) to share their favourite recipes for both recovery and our hormones.

Never thought about adjusting your nutrition to your menstrual cycle? Throughout out cycle, our hormones fluctuate – and so do your nutritional requirements. These recipes have been tailored for different phases of your menstrual cycle.

This is an easy to make recipe, and perfect for when you are in Phase 1 of your cycle – that’s during your period. Your iron requirements increase in Phase 1 as a result of menstruation. Dark chocolate and nuts are good sources of iron, and these balls provide a perfect pre- or post-session snack.

Serves: 8

Time: 25 minutes

  • 200g cashew nuts
  • 2 tbsp cacao powder
  • 2 tbsp cacao nibs
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil, melted

  1. Roast cashews for 8 minutes at 180 degrees or until lightly golden.

  2. Put roasted cashews in food processor and blend until cashews resemble a fine flour.

  3. Add in the cocoa powder, maple syrup and coconut oil.

  4. Blend until mixture comes together. It should stick together when you squeeze it.

  5. Add in the cocoa nibs and pulse until mixed through.

  6. Roll the mixture into medium sized balls with your hands.

  7. Enjoy! Store in an airtight container for up to a week.
