Our 2021 Women's Running Awards are finally here! These nutrition products were the top-rated by our team of testers...
Welcome to the 2021 Women’s Running Awards! This is the moment we’ve been waiting for all year: the moment that our trusted panel of happy runners gather together to thrash out the best of the best: we’ve tested over 300 new products and have now rated the best running shoes, clothes, tech, underwear, nutrition and training gear. It’s taken over four months of dedicated testing and deliberation, and probably more running than we do all year, to make sure that we put every single piece of kit through its paces.
We tested this nutrition before, during and after running, over varying distances, and then compared notes to see what came out on top…
The best vegan nutrition for runners
Winner: PERKIER Crunchy Peanut bar | £13.99 for 18 bars
There were no quibbles here among the panel; we all loved these bars! Meg enthused: “They’re flavoursome, full of nutrition, great value and totally moreish,” Resident peanut fan Esther loved the fact that they were less sweet than similar energy bars, but they were “still very peanutty, which is good.” Perkier is a small British company, passionate about producing healthy products that are low in sugar, packed with protein, and vegan, gluten free and palm oil free. They do all that, and they taste chuffing awesome, too.
Editor’s Choice: THE PROTEIN WORKS Vegan Wondershake | £44.99
Available in many flavours (apple and cinnamon for the win), we were so impressed with the versatility of Vegan Wondershake. Esther said: “I couldn’t believe this was vegan, as vegan protein shakes tend not to blend well, but this was super smooth, and packed in 22g of protein – what’s not to love?”
The best protein products for runners
Winner: DECATHLON Domyos Whey Protein Isolate | £19.99
We wear our hearts on our sleeves with Decathlon: it’s a love thing! Mara said: “This protein powder offers good value for money. It tastes good in protein shakes, baking, cooking, and protein smoothies.” For 20 quid, that’s an awful lot of bang for your buck.
Best Value: ALLSPORTS Empower Super Lean Protein Fix | £16.97
Sophie loved this protein, and used it after a number of long summer runs, when she was training for her first ultras after her third child. She said: “It’s not as heavily sweetened as most protein shakes with no artificial colourings. It was easy to mix and offered good protein base for adding frozen fruit.”
Editor’s Choice: THE PROTEIN WORKS Superfood Bites | £4.24
These arrived just before the summer holidays, and were inhaled before the kids could get their hands on them. Esther said: “They tasted gorgeous, and I love all the different flavours; I’ll be buying the chocolate one again. I like the fact they’re in cubes so you can just have a little nibble when you need to rather than a whole bar.”
The best health drinks for runners
Winner: KOLLO Premium Liquid Marine Collagen | £29.87 for 14 days
We’ve been using Kollo for a few months now and are total converts. A high-strength marine collagen that tastes nice? Get out of town! Esther said: “It tastes lovely and you can barely tell its marine origins at all. It’s easy to use, too. After several months of use I can attest to fewer injuries, fewer spots and my skin does look more even and clear. I still look 47 though.”
Editor’s Choice: SUPER U/RHEAL Clean Greens | £44.99
This unremarkable looking powder is packed to its eyebrows with powerful ingredients to add a nutritional punch to your morning smoothies. With spirulina, chlorella, moringa, wheatgrass, and barley grass tucked in every spoonful, you can give a massive boost to your super powers before the day’s started.
The best race nutrition for runners
Winner: PRECISION HYDRATION 1500 Effervescent Electrolyte Tablets | £8.99
Precision Hydration is a crucial part of our run kits, offering an easy way to manage electrolytes at any time. Sophie is a big fan since she went into a coma with hyponatremia during a race eight years ago.
