Activity trackers used to be little more than pedometers on a strap. Fine for reforming couch potatoes to record a walk to the shop for a tin of Campbell’s, less so for data-lusting runner geeks. Yet this water-resistant Samsung Gear Fit2 represents a new breed of smart-tracker.
The curved, super-AMOLED, 216x432mm-resolution screen is simply amazing. It’s bright, eye-catchingly colourful, intuitive and highly customisable – with desirable and fun watchfaces and even fonts. The elastomer strap is purr-invokingly comfortable and the unit is delightfully light, too.
There’s substance to go with the style. Features include heart-rate measurement, GPS, Spotify compatibility (when your smartphone is in range), wifi connectivity, 4GB of music storage and you can listen to it via wireless headphones – without your phone.
Accuracy is surprisingly close to the benchmark Suunto Ambit3 Peak. So much data is available on the screen that you don’t really need an app – a good job as it’s a little threadbare.
The battery life of four-and-a-bit days with light use isn’t so impressive and the surprising lack of iOS compatibility is another black mark. But this tracker can do things much pricier sportswatches can’t – and it bypasses the smartphone. All for a competitive price, too.
