COLUMBIA Bajada II Ankle Tight
£55 | Tester: Claire

Gear review: Essential tightsWhether you’re headed on a morning trail run or to yoga class, these aerobic tights are made to move with you. With four-way comfort stretch and an adjustable waist band their body contouring fit conforms to your movement allowing you to move freely without any restriction. They are true to fit size wise, however they are slightly generous at the calf. Perfect for the summer, the built-in UPF 50 blocks UV rays while the ultra-wicking Omni-wick material pulls moisture away from the body so sweat can evaporate quickly keeping you dry and comfortable and allowing you to stay focused on your run. A handy back zip-up security pocket keeps small items such as keys, cash or gels safe and secure.

RONHILL Momentum Sculpt Tight
£45 | Tester: Esther

Gear review: Essential tightsEven pattern refuseniks will love these – on the peg, the jazzy detailing might be offputting for some, but don’t be offput! The design, coupled with well-placed mesh panels, is flattering and will go with more items in your running wardrobe than you might think. The thick fabric feels super luxe, and while they have a drawstring waist, the string itself wasn’t needed. It’s not common to find a pair of tights that stay put without pulling a drawstring tight (and creating that unlovely line of red round the middle), but these do. With a good-sized zipped pocket at the back (offset, so it won’t dig into your back in the middle of those ad hoc ab sessions), and a large phone pocket on the leg, there’s plenty of storage for your stuff. They’re also so comfortable, you could happily keep them on all day – if those around you didn’t complain about you doing so.

UNDER ARMOUR Rush Run HeatGear Tights
£70 | Tester: Tina

Gear review: Essential tightsWith mineral infused fabric, these tights are claimed to absorb the energy your body gives out and reflect it back in to your muscles. They have a beautifully shaped waistband with a stretchy front panel so it moves with you as you train. There’s plenty of mesh in hotspots to improve breathability and the ankle zips give you the option to roll up the bottoms. These have a compression fit that isn’t irritating, and could aid recovery, giving them a second skin feel. The rear zipped pocket is a good size, too. Whatever your challenge, you’ll feel great in these tights and get lots of performance benefits as well.

How we test: All our kit is tested by real runners. Our reviews team is a group of passionate women with diverse running experiences, from dedicated marathon runners to happy plodders. We wear the clothes, run in the shoes and use the tech on our usual runs to see if they go the distance. We then give each piece of kit our star rating.
