Essential women’s running gear for summer

Read Time:   |  August 11, 2021

All the gear that's got us swooning this summer...

The sun’s out and it’s time for summer running at long last. It’s important to make sure you’ve got breathable, comfortable kit – so here are some of our recommendations…

SWEATY BETTY Swiftie Running Cap £25

This technical cap will protect your face as you run, with sweat-wicking fabric that’ll keep you dry whatever the weather. The elasticated adjustable strap is brilliant, too, ensuring the cap stays put and you can focus on your run. Available in a range of sleek colour ways, it’s a must-have for summer running.

ARC’TERYX Heliad Jacket £160

Investing in a decent running jacket is vital, and this one is a real treat. It’s lightweight and stylish, with technical fabric that moves quietly and softly with your body as you run. It’s breathable, so you won’t overheat in the summer, but it’s perfect for changing weather, too, with a high collar to protect you from wind and a DWR treatment to shed moisture. Plus, it’s easy to pack away if you’re off trail running or taking it on holiday.

Available in sizes XS-XL

RUNDERWEAR Women’s Seamless Running Vest £35

New in from our go-to brand for chafe-free running, this Runderwear vest is wonderfully soft and seamless. It’s designed to feel comfortable, with a relaxed fit, and is slightly longer than your average vest so you don’t have to worry about it riding up. The perfect top for a warm August run!

Available in sizes S-XL

ZAAZEE Alice Sports Bra | From £35

The Alice bra is available with or without padding, depending on what makes you feel more comfortable, and has a stylish strappy back. We love it for medium-impact activities, as the fabric is super soft. Another winner from the lovely small business that is Zaazee, made for runners and by runners.

Available in sizes 8-16

THIS MUM RUNS Slogan Leggings £42

The brilliance of these leggings is that This Mum Runs have really thought about what a runner wants: reflective detailing for visibility, pockets all over the place, a high waist with a drawstring and quick-drying, squat-proof fabric. They’ve become a wardrobe staple in no time!

Available in sizes 6-20

SEALSKINZ Waterproof Warm Weather Ankle-Length Sock £27.50

Sealskinz are 100% waterproof, which is a total game-changer for running. The Hydrostop barrier prevents any water from getting in, but the breathability allows heat to get out. They feel like your average stretchy running sock, but they’re much, much cleverer than that.

BROOKS Glycerin GTS 19 running shoes £140

We didn’t think it was possible to get the comfort of a neutral shoe (especially not the extreme comfort of something like Brooks Glycerin) in a ludicrously good support shoe, but Brooks have done it again. This is nothing short of miraculous for those of us with collapsed arches and funny ankles: a supremely comfortable, cushioned shoe with expert support where you need it most. It doesn’t even feel like a support shoe, and that’s one of the biggest compliments we’ve ever paid a support shoe EVER.

PRECISION HYDRATION 500 Moderate Strength electrolyte drink £8.99

Women’s Running editor Esther swears by this when it comes to staying hydrated – dissolve one tablet in 500ml of water and you’ll find you absorb more liquid and replace electrolytes more effectively. For those of you who get your sweat on, this is essential.

SUNGOD Sierra sunglasses | From £55

These ultra-light sunnies are packed with clever tech that will give you 100% UV protection while you run. They’re secure, sturdy and come with a lifetime guarantee, so you know you’re getting bang for your buck. You can select your lens based on how high-tech you’d like it, with added perks like anti-glare available. Plus, there are plenty of colour combinations to choose from, so you can find your perfect look.

THIS MUM RUNS Headspace Running Vest £24.99

We love the running gear from This Mum Runs, and this training top is another gem in the collection. It’s light and airy, made from quick-drying fabric, making it a perfect summer training companion. The sizing is pretty inclusive, too, and the racer back style is super flattering. It’s available in a variety of colours with plenty of slogans to choose from.

Available in sizes 6-20

SWEATY BETTY Ultra Run Sports Bra £35

First off: sale alert! This bra is usually £50, but is sitting pretty at just £35 in the Sweaty Betty sale at the moment. The moulded cups offer high support, with adjustable straps and well-placed panels that aid ventilation. It’s gorgeous, too, with a generous range of pastel-coloured options available.

Available in sizes 32A-38F

BP3 Coni Sporty High Waist underwear £22

Not only are these knickers chafe-free and almost invisible under your leggings, they’re also designed to keep you dry on your period. They’re absorbent enough that, on lighter days, you can get away with wearing them on their own, and they provide extra reassurance with a tampon or moon cup on your heavier days. The scalloped edge is flattering, and they’re light and breathable enough that you won’t feel too sweaty.

Available in sizes 8-24

RUNDERWEAR Women’s Ultra-Light Running Shorts £50

New from Runderwear, these super light running shorts are perfect for keeping you cool on hot summer runs. Their crowning glory is the completely seamless inner, so you can guarantee a run free of nasty chafing, and the back pocket is the perfect size for your running essentials. Blissfully, they’re not too short and not too long, which is no easy feat with a pair of shorts!

Available in sizes S-XL

GARMIN Forerunner 55 sports watch £179.99

This is the perfect watch for beginner runners, with easy-to-use features that help you track your progress and better understand your runs. It tailors your running to you, and provides stats on your overall health, including that all-important heart rate. Our personal fave feature is the two-week battery life, because who can be bothered with constant charging?

SAUCONY Endorphin Trail £155

Saucony have updated their speedy Endorphin range with this exciting new trail shoe, out 15 July. Blending the brand’s SPEEDROLL ™ Technology with a thick stack of ultra-responsive, featherweight PWRRUN PB™ cushioning, they’re designed to propel you forwards with ease. We can’t wait to give them a try!

RIIXO Recovery Ice Ball £19.98

This massage ball is a great alternative to vibrating tech, combining pressure with cryotherapy to ease tight muscles and have you run-ready again in no time. Just pop it in the freezer for a few hours before you want to use it and massage it into your sore spots to reduce DOMS and limit pain from nasty injuries like shin splints.

AFTERSHOKZ Aeropex Wireless Bone Conduction Headphones £149.95

It’s official: open-ear listening is a game changer. With these bone conduction headphones you can run safely without blocking out traffic noises, and you don’t have to compromise on sound. They’re lightweight, with an 8-hour play time, and are the perfect way to listen to your favourite playlist or podcast as you run. Plus, as we ease back into real-life racing, they’re essential: some events won’t let you take part with in-ear headphones.

SWEATY BETTY X HALLE BERRY Frankie Racer Neck Vest £50

We’re head over heels for the new Sweaty Betty and Halle Berry collab, and this top is another winner. The bold stitching and racer back are so flattering, and it’s made from technical, sweat-wicking jersey fabric that’s super comfortable. It’s on the snug side, but it won’t make you feel constricted.

Available in sizes XXS-XXL

RUNDERWEAR Original V4 Running Bra £50

Runderwear really know what they’re doing when it comes to sports bras, so you can expect total comfort and brilliant support here. The incredibly soft and technical fabric doesn’t rub or chafe at all, and the underband is designed to minimise boob bounce as you run. The original bra is perfect for runners with small to medium-sized boobs, but don’t fret – you can find our recommendations for bigger-busted runners here.

Available in sizes 32A-38D

BAM Bamboo Bikini Brief £10

Nothing beats bamboo for softness, and BAM have totally nailed it with these pants. This sporty brief is designed not to rub or chafe, so you can run with ease. It’s really lightweight, too, but with enough elasticity for a comfortable fit. You can feel good about this purchase, too: the positive impact of these pants is the equivalent to 63.1L of water saved and 1.2KG of emissions avoided – win!

Available in sizes 8-16

KIT CHANGE Fit Legging £50

These leggings are a summer staple, perfect for running as well as cross-training. We love the high waist and you don’t need to size down to feel the benefits of the compression fit. Plus, they’re squat proof – vital, if you ask us! The colour is gorgeous, and each pair is made from 16 recycled plastic bottles.

Available in sizes XS-XXL

HILLY Women’s Lite Socklet £10

To honour the legendary Dr Ron Hill MBE, we had to include our favourite running socks of the moment: the Hilly Lite Socklets. They’re lightweight with minimal padding, making them perfect for hot summer running and race day performance. They’re also really quick-drying, which is essential for the warmer months.

PREMAX Recovery Cream Sour Cherry £21

This is launching on 6 June, and we can’t wait! It’s a restorative and soothing cream formulated to assist recovery after exercise, repairing your skin hydration and resilience. The sour cherry extract is a natural ingredient that’s a favourite amongst elite athletes, helping your skin bounce back after some intense training.

ASICS Metaspeed Sky running shoes £225

These are some serious racers, designed to propel you towards a new PB by extending your stride length. They’re carbon-plated (posh) to help you conserve energy while maintaining your pace, and are what we’ll be looking out for at the start lines as racing resumes.

OOFOS Oomg Eezee Low Shoe £110

Since we first got into recovery shoes, we’ve never looked back – and OOFOS are our go-to brand. Pop these on between runs and they’ll reduce stress on your joints, absorbing 37% more impact than traditional footwear. They’re also easily machine washable!
