The results from our 2021 Women's Running Awards are in! Here's the running tech our team of testers loved...
Welcome to the 2021 Women’s Running Awards! This is the moment we’ve been waiting for all year: the moment that our trusted panel of happy runners gather together to thrash out the best of the best: we’ve tested over 300 new products and have now rated the best running shoes, clothes, tech, underwear, nutrition and training gear. It’s taken over four months of dedicated testing and deliberation, and probably more running than we do all year, to make sure that we put every single piece of kit through its paces.
We’ve worn and calibrated this year’s products over and over again, and our testers have come together to share which tech made all the difference to their run. Here’s what came out on top…
Winner: BEATS Powerbeats Pro | £219.95
The Powerbeats Pro are packed full of market-leading tech; they’re wireless with secure ear hooks, water resistant and offer up to 24 hours of charge when used with their charging case. Meg said: “These have a comfortable in-ear fit and I loved the slick design and touchable sides for controlling volume and play/pause. They’re easy to use and provide insane sound quality!”
Winner: NURVV Run Smart Insoles | £249.99
You can completely transform your running with Nurvv by getting a unique insight into your running power metrics. These insoles measure biometrics from the feet to help all runners, regardless of ability, to run faster, further and reduce injury. Esther said: “Even though these are initially an expensive outlay, the results could be life-changing when it comes to training, performance and longevity. Once you’ve done a few runs you start to get in-depth feedback that could mean goodbye to niggles forever.”
Winner: GARMIN Forerunner 945 | £629.99
Once you ‘get’ Garmin watches, it’s very easy to move between different models and intuitively pick up features, so expect to graduate to the 945 without spending hours reading manuals or watching tutorials. The Forerunner 945 is great for athletes who want intricate stats for training, races and lifestyle.
Tina upgraded from her 745, and can’t live without her 945 now: “There are so many features to love, but it’s the suggested workouts that I rate, especially while I’m recovering from an ankle injury. I also love the maps it gives both for my trail runs, and for guided runs.”
Editor’s Choice: AFTERSHOKZ Aeropex | £149.95
We love these. Being budfree gives you more freedom, as well as ensuring greater safety on the move. Chrissie said: “These are light, slim fitting and comfortable to wear with a good battery life. The fact that they are waterproof (up to 1 metre for 30 minutes) makes them my go-to when exercising in the rain and on full sweat mode. They have an in-built mic too.
Editor’s Choice: KALENJI Dual Ant+ HRM Belt | £29.99
For anyone who loves to cross-train as well as run, this HRM belt from Kalenji offers brilliant value for money. Mara said: “It was very easy to use and good value for money, and the HR readings were more accurate than my current belt. The strap is easily adjustable and washable.”
Editor’s Choice: POLAR Vantage M2 | £269
With the M2 it’s not just about extremely good looks. You get everything you’d expect (GPS, heart rate tracking, music and phone controls, etc) and a load of other stuff you might not know you needed but that will help your running no end. We were particularly impressed with Training Load Pro, a feature that enables you to work out how hard you’ve been training, and how hard you need to train. Genius tech.
Best Value: MIIEGO BOOM MINI | £99
The BOOM MIINI are great value, giving you lightweight, ultracompact on-ear headphones with impressive sound. We loved the changeable ear-cushions, and how they’re sweat-proof regardless of activity. Mara said: “They’re easy to wear and didn’t fall off during workouts or runs and I loved the forward and backward song function.”
