5 women’s running jackets for summer

Read Time:   |  May 20, 2016

In classic UK style, the weather has been rather sporadic over the last month – one minute it’s snowing, the next we have glorious sunshine! While we cross our fingers for plenty more sun and absolutely no more snow, you can never guarantee there won’t be a downpour! For that reason, the WR team have been out testing the latest women’s running jackets for summer and we’re loving our finds. Here are five of the best we tried:

Helly Hansen Women's Aspire Jacket

Helly Hansen Women’s Aspire Jacket
£90 | Tested by: Lisa

This stylish vibrant fabric is lightweight and durable, perfect for any condition. It will keep the chill at bay but, thanks to the quick-dry fabric, it also doesn’t allow you to overheat when training hard. It features a drawcord at the waist and a hood too – ideal for rainy days! The only downfall, in our opinion, was the jacket’s lack of pockets. For our tester, Lisa, though, she couldn’t fault it for comfort. “I forgot I was wearing the jacket – it’s that light!”

Salomon Fast Wing Graphic Hoodie

Salomon Fast Wing Graphic Hoodie
£80 | Tested by: Tina

We loved the snazzy look of this graphic jacket, so were thrilled when it came up trumps in our performance test. Made from taffeta fabric, it’s lightweight and is super easy to carry, folding down into its own pocket. While not fully waterproof, it does shed light moisture and offers excellent wind protection. Extremely breathable, it doesn’t trap sweat either, so you don’t have to worry about getting too sticky and hot. “The jacket is soft, breathable and light– it’s been my parkrun jacket as it’s still chilly early in the mornings, and it’s just thick enough to keep the wind out” ” – Tina, contributing editor

Howies Helium Lightweight Jacket

Howies Helium Lightweight Jacket
£35 | Tester: Jackie

Made from lightweight Ripstop Nylon fabric, this jackets weighs a mere 99g – less than your phone! It features a DWR water-repellent finish, meaning you’ll get full protection from the rain, however heavy the downpour, and is also fully windproof. It packs down into the zip pocket, making it very easy to carry. A favourite with our tester Jackie – “The jacket is light and very comfortable, with a good size pocket for your keys.”

Pearl Izumi Women's Convertible Jacket

Pearl Izumi Women’s Convertible Jacket
£89.99 | Tester: Olivia

This jacket will keep you comfortable and protected – whatever the weather throws at you! With zipped sleeves, it can quickly become a gilet if the sun decides to come out, and the Direct-Vent panels also provide added ventilation. We were impressed with how well it stood up in cold conditions too, keeping us extremely cosy and fully protected in windy and wet conditions. Our tester, Olivia, was also a big fan of the florescent detailing, adding extra saftey on dark roads.

 Craft Mind Jacket

Craft Mind Jacket
£50 | Tester: Liz

For attention to detail, Craft has come out on top with the design of this jacket. If you like to listen to music when you run, there’s a handy chest pocket to store your phone or MP3, with a hole at the back for earphones. It’s adjustable at the waist, offering a bespoke fit, and provides excellent ventilation, thanks to the posterior ventilation vents. For our tester, Liz, though, she “didn’t feel it kept the wind off well although it [did provide] a barrier for drizzle.”
