Womens Running Race Series Liverpool 2017

The Women’s Running Race Series returned to Liverpool’s beautiful Sefton Park on 16 July for the fifth time. Just over 500 women signed up to race the 5K and 10K events, as well as one of our biggest fields for the family mile race, in which men and children are welcome to run.

It was a drizzly start in the peaceful Victorian park as runners began to gather but, as the morning went on, the forecast proved right and the sun gradually broke through the clouds. During the morning, runners heard from a number of race partners and volunteers. The pacers took to the stage with WRRS Liverpool regular Collette explaining how our friendly pace groups work. Melissa from Boobydoo stepped up to talk about the importance of wearing a sports bra to run, and the advice on offer at the Boobydoo stand in the race village. There was a chance for two lucky ladies to win Good Full Stop bars from our official Healthy Snack Partner, who were also offering samples on their stand on the day. Sophie from Claire House children’s hospice, our Regional Charity Partner, spoke about the invaluable support Women’s Running participants can give to the organization, and our National Charity Partner, NSPCC, also had a cheering squad on hand to give rousing support to our runners! The race was also supported by our Healthy Blend Partner, Roots Collective, and our Hydration Partner, Saka Water (whose gazebo also offered welcome shelter from the early drizzle!).

After a thorough warm-up from Women’s Running’s very own Ashleigh Johnson-Palmer, a runner, fitness enthusiast and gymnastics coach, the runners were ready to go. As they set off around the course, there was great crowd support from friends and family who had turned out to cheer everyone on. First back in the 5K was a delighted Allison Reid, who was running with her twin daughters Amy (who placed third) and Laura. In second place was Anita Dawson. Lois Varnam was first in the 10K in an impressive 42mins 29secs, with Lauren Wilson just over a minute behind in second, and Lindsey Harland – running her first ever 10K race – in third.

We raced it!

“I’ve done this race twice, it was my very first race two years ago – it’s all women which is fantastic, so there are no men in the way! The atmosphere was wonderful, I love it, there’s such a good community atmosphere with running. I’m training for the Great North Run so I wanted to get a good 5K in for speedwork.”

“This is the first time I’ve run 10K, I only did my first 5K in June and just started running for fitness, and since then I’ve got into running more and more and really enjoyed it, so just thought I’d see what I could do. It was really good, great atmosphere and nice weather to race in. No, I didn’t expect to come third! But I’m really pleased with how I did.”
