Following on from the success of last year's inaugural event, ASICS have launched their 2021 World Ekiden – and Team WR are taking part. Want to join us? Read on!
First up, don’t worry: we didn’t know what an Ekiden was when we first heard about it either. It’s a long-distance relay race, mostly held on roads, and the first one ever took place in Japan in 1917.
Fast forward to last year, and ASICS held an international Ekiden, inviting teams of runners from all over the world to run a virtual relay race. Over 56,000 people from 179 different countries took part, and this year they’re hoping for even more.
How does it work? Firstly you need to find a team of up to six runners. It can be less, but it just means that someone will need to run more than one leg of the race. Once you’ve registered, you select the leg you would like to run – these are split up into varying distances, designed to suit runners of all different abilities.
When you’ve sussed out who is doing what, you just need to walk, jog or run your leg between 10th and 22nd November 2021. You and your team will pass a digital tasuki between you (a sash that is used traditionally to pass between teammates in Japanese distance running) to run the full marathon distance. And don’t forget to log your miles!
Everyone who signs up will automatically raise funds for organisations championing movement for positive mental health, thanks to ASICS.
“Throughout 2021, ASICS is on a mission to inspire as many people as possible to experience the uplifting impact of movement on the mind as a way of achieving a sound mind in a sound body, ” says Gary Raucher, Executive Vice President at ASICS EMEA. “Back for its second year, the ASICS World Ekiden 2021 is one of the many events we’re hosting across the year that we hope will inspire people to get involved. We’re excited for runners of all levels and abilities everywhere to unite in their teams and combine their collective efforts as they race towards the virtual finish line.”
