Challenges to keep yourself busy in isolation

If you're suffering from cabin fever or in need of new ways to entertain the family, here are some of our favourite ways to get active

Running out of isolation ideas? Aren’t we all. There are only so many times you can do the same old workout video before you start going stir crazy. The challenges popping all over our social media have been filling us with some reassurance and inspiration, though. Not only do they provide some welcome entertainment, but they’re also a great opportunity to raise money for our healthcare heroes working for the NHS by setting up a JustGiving page for people to support your challenge. Or, if you’d rather just take on a challenge of the fun of it, that’s absolutely fine, too!

Here are some of our favourites…

#HandstandUpToCorona challenge

It’s as simple as it sounds: upload a photo of yourself doing a handstand on social media using the hashtag #HandstandUpToCorona and challenge three others to do the same.  We spent a lot of time upside down over the weekend trying to master this. If you’re struggling, check out the online classes from challenge organisers School of Calisthenics – mastering your own bodyweight could be seriously beneficial to your running, plus it’s brilliant fun.

Runderwear #60DayChallenge

Runderwear have been hosting daily 20-minute workouts on their Facebook page, encouraging their followers to set goals for themselves. Try and beat the Runderwear Pyramid Challenge in the quickest time possible, or give yourself a smaller weekly challenge like seeing how long you can hold a plank. It’s a great way to stay motivated and feel part of a community, as well as improving your core strength. Check in every morning at 10am – find out more here.

Kerry Sutton’s plank and ski sit challenge

Kerry has really been putting us through our paces with this one: start with a 30-second plank and/or a 30-second ski sit and add 5 seconds each day. It might not sound like a huge amount to the more athletic among you but, trust us, you’ll feel the burn. Try adding 10 seconds a day if you need to step it up. SRG #RunSpring challenge

The lovely organisers of @socialrungroup are holding a virtual scavenger hunt for runners this month. Every Monday they’ll announce an item you have to find, photograph or create while you’re out on your run or exercising at home. Once you’ve found the item, share your photos online and make sure to tag SRG. There’s a Polar Ignite watch in it for the most creative, so it’s definitely worth having a go!

30 Days of Yoga with Adriene

If you’ve never tried yoga before, now could be the perfect time to give it a go. It’s brilliant for your mental as well as your physical health and is so easy to do at home – all you need is a comfortable mat. This 30-day challenge is perfect for beginners, but could also be a way to rediscover yoga if you haven’t done a session in a while. It’s a fantastic way for runners to connect with their bodies, have a proper stretch and improve flexibility.
